I am Isabel León; visual artist, performer and teacher.
I conceive artistic practice as an act closely linked to life, and therefore, my work is always connected to my deepest thoughts and emotions.
I am interested in the seemingly small or trivial, the game and the absurd. My work emerges from the here and now, and in it I always leave room for intuition.
With Niyama Saucha I continue on my vital and professional journey, making visible what seems irrelevant —and it is not— and giving permanence to the everyday.
The road to this point has taken me through very different places and moments, and training has always been present.
I graduated in Fine Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, I took the Erasmus scholarship in Athens and the Promoe, in Havana.
Sometime later I completed the Official Master’s Degree in Art Production and Research at the University of Granada, and I am currently training as a yoga teacher.
As for my training in the field of performance, I have been able to enjoy the teachings of artists such as Marilyn Arsem, Esther Ferrer or Bartolomé Ferrando.
So far, I have been fortunate to participate in numerous festivals, residencies and performance meetings.
In this way I have been able to take my live actions to countries as diverse as Finland, Canada, Ukraine, Morocco… and a long etcetera.
The EXCHANGE Live Art project deserves a special mention, thanks to which —and always accompanied by the artist Ana Matey— I have been able to investigate communication and creative processes shared with artists from all over the world.
In addition, I have participated in numerous online video performance projects and I am part of the international performance collective Out of Site.
In my daily life I combine artistic practice with teaching performance.
Specifically, I give workshops on action art in art centers, universities and independent spaces.
Among many others, I could highlight the courses I have offered at the Federico García Lorca Center in Granada, the Territori Festival in Ibiza, or at Bilbaoarte.
Thanks to this experience today I can assure that training and learning always move in two directions.
A large part of my work consists of video actions in which I experiment with the audiovisual medium as a communication tool beyond the live experience.
As a result of this research, I have developed several series of mini video actions, such as International Day, A Day Like Today and Two Words.
This material was captured in the book From Cloud to Paper, thanks to which I was able to establish a before and after in this journey.
Niyama Saucha draws heavily from this process, and it is no coincidence that the whole project revolves around a video action.
Visual artist, performer, teacher… Sometimes it is difficult to talk about oneself.
